Eritrea’s national air carrier Eritrean Airlines operates under the ownership of the government of Eritrea. Its main base is at Asmara international airport. Eritrea Airline’s scheduled passenger service has been terminated since 2008. Currently this airline only operates a few hajj flights annually. Eritrean Airline regained operations under a new management in 2011. In the same year it was merged with a new company Nasair to form the Nasair Eritrea. Unfortunately Eritrean airlines have been banned by the European commission. It has a very small fleet size of 3 flights but after its merger with Nasair it flies to various destinations that include Egypt, Eritrea, Germany, Italy, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. Future prospects After resuming operations, Eritrean airlines introduced a new livery on receiving its first A320. This was also used for its inaugural service that flew passengers to Dubai and Lahore. With the addition of the second A320 the airline launched flights to Karachi. Once its currently stored Dornier fleet becomes airworthy the air carrier is also planning to restore domestic services. The Eritrean airline also has long term fleet plans that include the introduction of wide body planes such as Airbus A330 and the new Boeing 737s which may replace the existing A320s. The Eritrean airline is a member of IATA. Its main cargo flying to Asmara comprises of relief goods donated by the government and several EU country’s relief organizations.
